A customer had formatted a 4TB HFS volume using Disk Utility. There was now a new HFS partition on drive. The customer had attempted recovery but a substantial amount of video files seem corrupted so they sent the hard drive to us. A disk image was made and a search for fragments of the videos was undertaken. We found data from Canon Cameras producing H264.mov files, Sony Alpha Camera producing .mov files, separate Audio Wav files - timestamps on audio unit not accurate since not set on device, and still camera photos. A program to check the size shown in the moov atom (ie expected size of the file) against the actual size of the file to see if they would realistically play ok. In the end .mov .mpeg, .mp4 files were recovered and most were assembled correctly to allow them to play again. The customer said ... I was given an accurate assessment, devoid of sales talk, and an accurate “no-song-and-dance” quotation. I can highly recommend this company.
